Sandstone and travertine care in Clontarf
Clontarf is a small waterfront suburb on Middle Harbour, between Sandy Bay and Castle Rock. Much of its stone steps down toward the water, and we care for it with that in mind.

Clontarf is one of the smaller suburbs on the Northern Beaches, with about 1,750 residents at the 2021 Census, and it takes its name from the Clontarf district of Dublin. It sits on the western side of the Balgowlah peninsula facing Middle Harbour, reached by Sandy Bay Road. Clontarf Reserve, with its tidal pool, playground and cafe, runs behind Clontarf Beach, while Castle Rock and Grotto Point lie toward the harbour entrance. The history is unusual: in 1868 Prince Alfred was shot here and survived when his braces deflected the bullet. Homes are largely houses set on slopes, and sandstone appears as terraced walls, long stairs toward the foreshore and harbour-view terraces, often with pools.
Stone on the Clontarf foreshore lives in two climates at once. At the bottom of the block, steps and walls near the high-tide line stay wet and carry tidal salt, so algae builds up quickly and the treads turn slick. As salty water evaporates from the pores, crystals form and the surface begins to scale. Higher up, terraces and pool coping catch afternoon sun off the water and salt carried on the breeze, which settles on paving and works in with every dew. Bushland toward Grotto Point and in established gardens adds leaf litter and shade. Pool water splashing on coping brings chlorine or salt into the mix, and both leave deposits as they dry.
Planning controls for Clontarf come from the Manly Local Environmental Plan 2013. Our search found no conservation area here, yet a single house, garden or boatshed can be listed in its own right, so confirm your lot's status with council before any restoration. Clause 5.10 of the LEP is where consent requirements for heritage items come from, and council can confirm in writing when minor maintenance falls outside them. Waterfront owners have a second consideration: anything structural at the water's edge, such as a failing sea wall, is beyond cleaning and needs an engineer and the right approvals. Our scope covers cleaning, sealing and surface care of existing stone.
From Double Bay, Clontarf is a drive of about 25 to 35 minutes outside peak hours over the Spit Bridge, an estimate rather than a measured time. Sandy Bay Road and the streets above it are narrow and steep in places, so we check van parking and the carry route to the lower levels beforehand. Our technicians begin on the top terrace and descend, catching run-off on every level, and schedule the lowest steps for low tide so nothing is washed into Middle Harbour. Pools are covered before coping is touched. Cleaning products stay on the land side, and nothing is ever rinsed off a sea wall into the water, whatever the stage of the tide.

Frequently asked questions
Local questions from Clontarf homeowners.
Can you clean the stone steps that lead down to our waterfront?
Yes, where access is safe. We work top-down, time the lowest steps for low tide and collect the wash water at each landing. If steps are loose or undermined, we stop and recommend a marine contractor.
Is Clontarf in a heritage conservation area?
No conservation area appeared in our research. Individual properties can still be heritage items under the Manly LEP 2013, so confirm your lot's status with Northern Beaches Council before restoration.
Our harbour-facing terrace has a crusty white film. What is it?
Most likely salt efflorescence: salt left behind as moisture evaporates from the stone. We brush it off dry, rinse the remainder, and consider a breathable sealer to slow it returning.
Can sandstone near the high-tide line be sealed?
Usually not. Stone that the harbour wets regularly cannot dry out enough to take a sealer, and trapping salt inside does harm. We clean it and leave it to breathe.
Do you work on travertine pool decks as well as sandstone walls?
Yes. Travertine gets acid-free, limestone-safe cleaning and a salt-resistant sealer, while sandstone gets low-pressure, biocide-led cleaning. Each has its own products, chosen after testing.
How do you get equipment to a waterfront home with no driveway access?
We carry it down in stages, using compact recovery gear and hoses run from the nearest tap. We agree the route with you first so garden beds and lawns are protected.
