Waterfront stone care in Point Piper
Point Piper is a small harbour peninsula of waterfront estates, and its stone works hard: sea walls, jetty steps and pool terraces that sit metres from the water. We clean and protect them without harming the stone or the harbour.

Point Piper is compact, with only around eleven streets, yet it is home to some of the most expensive houses in Australia and has repeatedly set national sale records. Wolseley Road and Wunulla Road follow the water, with Wentworth Street, Buckhurst Avenue, Longworth Avenue and Wyuna Road behind them. Duff Reserve, off Wolseley Road, and Lady Martin's Beach give glimpses of the shoreline, while Seven Shillings Beach and Redleaf Pool mark the edge toward Double Bay. On these estates stone sits right on the harbour: sandstone sea walls, steps down to jetties and boatsheds, and terraces and pool surrounds in sandstone or travertine designed to be seen from the water.
Nothing here is far from salt. Our reading of the setting is that harbour-front stone takes wave splash on its lower courses, salt spray on its upper faces and constant wetting and drying in between, which is the cycle that drives salt crystallisation in porous stone. Pool terraces add a second source: salt-chlorinator residue and splash water dry on coping and leave scale lines and white crust. On travertine, an acidic descaler used to remove that scale will etch the surface. On sandstone, a pressure washer used to remove green growth on a sea wall will cut into the face. Most of the damage we are asked about on waterfront properties began with one of those two shortcuts.
Woollahra Council's list of heritage conservation areas does not include Point Piper, so most homes here are not affected by area-wide conservation controls. That does not mean nothing is listed. Individual heritage items exist, the best known being Dunara on the State Heritage Register, and if your property is an item, check with Woollahra Council before restoration or changes to its stonework. Waterfront structures can also raise questions that go beyond the stone itself. Where a sea wall or jetty step shows movement, cracking or undermining, that is a matter for an engineer and a marine contractor. Our role is cleaning, stain treatment and sealing, and we say so plainly when something falls outside it.
Point Piper is the nearest waterfront suburb to our Double Bay base, roughly five minutes away. Most estates have controlled access, so we arrange entry, parking for the work vehicle and any concierge or house manager contact in advance. Work beside the harbour is planned so that nothing enters the water: run-off is bunded and vacuumed up, products are chosen for the setting, and pools are covered or boomed. Lower terraces and steps are often reached through gardens or down long stairways, so equipment is hand-carried and staged carefully. Where a house is being prepared for an event or sale, we work back from your date and allow drying time before any sealing.

Frequently asked questions
Local questions from Point Piper homeowners.
Can you clean a sandstone sea wall without anything going into the harbour?
For the accessible faces, yes. We bund and vacuum-recover wash water and choose products suited to a waterfront setting. Lower courses in the wave zone are assessed on site, and some may only be reachable at low tide or by a marine contractor.
Our jetty steps are green and slippery. What do you recommend?
A biocide treatment with a long enough dwell to kill the growth, then a low-pressure rinse with the run-off captured. On steps that stay wet, a maintenance clean every year or so keeps them safer. We won't use high pressure, which roughens the stone and helps growth return.
Point Piper isn't a heritage conservation area. Does that mean anything goes?
Not for every property. Some homes, such as Dunara, are individually listed, and those carry their own requirements. If you are unsure, Woollahra Council can tell you whether your property is a heritage item.
Do you coordinate with house managers and other trades?
Yes. On larger estates we usually deal with a house manager, builder or landscaper. We share our schedule, agree access and parking, and sequence our work so that sealing comes after other trades have finished on the area.
Should waterfront terraces be sealed differently from the rest of the house?
They often need a sealer selected for salt exposure and a shorter re-seal interval. We test absorbency on each surface and may use different products on the terrace, the coping and sheltered paths.
Can you get a terrace ready before an event at the house?
Usually, with enough notice. Cleaning needs drying time before sealing, and sealers need cure time before furniture and guests. Tell us the date when you request a quote and we will say honestly whether the full scope fits.
