Travertine cleaning and sealing in Newport

Newport's ocean-view pools and Pittwater-side terraces often use travertine. Both settings drive salt into the stone, and both respond well to acid-free cleaning and proper sealing.

Newport travertine falls into two broad groups, and which one you have depends on the side of the peninsula. Ocean-facing pool surrounds and terraces near Newport Beach and Bungan Head take wind and salt spray, on top of pool water drying along the coping. Pittwater-side terraces around the quieter western streets are more sheltered but humid, and they collect leaf litter, mould and algae in the corners that miss the afternoon sun. Both kinds pick up sunscreen and food oils around loungers and outdoor kitchens. Over the long term, salt does the real damage, crystallising in the pores and pitting the coping edge. Acidic cleaners add etching on top, because travertine is a limestone.

The cleaning plan changes with that split. On the ocean side, our technicians focus on lifting salt scale and the fine grit that wind deposits in the holes; on Pittwater terraces, the priority is a limestone-safe biocide for mould and algae, left to dwell before scrubbing. In both cases the products are alkaline or pH-neutral, the brushes are soft rotary pads and the rinse is gentle, with the pool covered and the water collected rather than sent toward Pittwater or the surf. Stubborn oil marks near the barbecue may need a poultice. We also note open holes, worn traffic paths and any coping pieces that sound hollow.

Sealing follows once the stone has dried, which takes longer on a shaded Pittwater terrace than on an ocean deck in full sun. Holes are packed with a filler blended to the stone, and the travertine is treated with an impregnator chosen for salt and chlorine, worked in and then wiped back so nothing forms a film. A natural finish is standard, and an enhancer is available if a test patch convinces you. Expect ocean-facing coping to need attention before the sheltered side does, so drip a little water on the exposed edges once a year to check. We record the product and date for consistent re-sealing.

Frequently asked questions

Travertine questions we hear in Newport.

Does Pittwater-side travertine need sealing as much as ocean-side?

It still benefits, especially around pools. Sheltered Pittwater terraces usually hold their seal longer than ocean-facing coping, but both should be checked yearly.

Our travertine has green growth in the corners. Is it safe to remove?

Yes, with limestone-safe biocides. We avoid bleach-based products that can leave residue and affect sealers.

Can you remove sunscreen marks from travertine?

Usually. Sunscreen and body oils respond to degreasers and, if deep, to a solvent poultice. Sealing afterward makes future marks easier to clean.

How long does a Newport travertine job take?

It depends on the area, the amount of filling needed and drying time. The quote comes with a realistic schedule that allows for the drive.
