Travertine cleaning and sealing in Freshwater

Travertine pool coping and balconies in Freshwater deal with salt from the beach as well as from the pool. Cleaning without acid and sealing properly are what keep the surface intact.

Freshwater's renovated houses and newer apartments use a lot of travertine: pool coping and decks, rear terraces, front entries and balconies facing the beach. The stone looks right in a beach setting but works hard here. Sand from the beach is carried in on feet and towels and grinds into the surface. Spray and pool splash leave salt that crystallises in the pores and gradually pits the edge of the coping. On balconies, the corners furthest from the sun grow mould, and drips from planters leave rings. Acidic cleaners make all of this worse by etching the stone.

We clean Freshwater travertine with alkaline and pH-neutral products designed for limestone. Loose sand is removed first so it does not act as an abrasive under the brushes. Soft rotary brushes then work the surface and holes, and a low-pressure rinse lifts residue, which is recovered rather than allowed to run off a balcony edge or into a pool. Our technicians point out where filler is missing and where dull patches are etching rather than dirt. We also note any coping pieces that sound hollow when tapped, as these should be re-bedded before sealing.

Sealing follows once the stone is dry. Gaps in the face are filled to match the stone, and a penetrating impregnator chosen for salt exposure is brushed on in measured coats, any surplus wiped back. Grip underfoot is unchanged, an important point on a deck where children run. You can choose an enhancing sealer for a richer colour after seeing a test patch. Travertine this close to the surf needs an annual check, focusing on the waterline edge of the coping and the most exposed corner of any balcony, and a re-seal when water no longer beads.

Frequently asked questions

Travertine questions we hear in Freshwater.

Our coping sounds hollow in places. Can you still seal it?

We can clean around it, but hollow or loose pieces need a tiler or pool builder to fix them in place before they are sealed. We will mark the pieces we find.

How do we stop planter rings on our balcony?

Use saucers with feet so water does not sit on the stone. Existing rings usually respond to limestone-safe cleaning, and sealing reduces new ones.

Is our travertine filled or unfilled?

We check on site. Filled travertine has its holes packed with a matching filler. Unfilled or partly unfilled stone has open holes, which collect sand and are usually worth filling before sealing.

How often should we rinse our pool coping?

After heavy use and on hot, dry days, a quick freshwater rinse helps. Removing salt before it dries in the pores reduces salt attack.
