Travertine cleaning and sealing in Collaroy
Beachfront travertine in Collaroy is exposed to salt from the surf and from the pool. Without sealing, the coping edge is usually the first part to fail.

Many Collaroy beachfront homes have travertine pool surrounds and terraces between the house and the sand. On these properties, salt reaches the stone from two directions at once: pool water splashing onto the coping, and spray carried in off the surf. As that salty water dries, crystals grow inside the pores, and over several summers the waterline edge begins to pit and flake. Wind-blown sand is the second force. It behaves like a very fine abrasive, sanding traffic paths into the deck and dulling the finish near the beach gate. Shaded areas against walls grow mould, and acidic pool-shop cleaners can etch the surface, adding dull patches to the wear.
Sand has to come off before any brush goes down, otherwise the scrubbing simply grinds it into the stone, so our technicians start with a thorough sweep and blow-down. The travertine is then washed with alkaline and pH-neutral cleaners made for limestone, worked into the holes with soft rotary pads and rinsed gently. The pool is covered or contained, and the rinse water goes into a wet vacuum rather than toward the beach. Afterwards we walk the deck with you, separating marks that have gone from those that are etching or sand wear, and tap the coping to find any hollow pieces a tiler should re-bed first.
Collaroy decks are sealed only once the stone is genuinely dry and the forecast is calm, because an onshore wind will scatter sand across a freshly sealed surface. Holes are filled with a filler tinted to suit the stone, and an impregnator rated for salt exposure goes on in measured coats, wiped back before it can dry on top. The finish stays natural and keeps its grip around the pool. Because beachfront travertine is about as exposed as stone gets in Sydney, plan on a water-drop test every year along the coping edge and on the terrace closest to the sand, and re-seal those sections as soon as drops stop beading.

Frequently asked questions
Travertine questions we hear in Collaroy.
Our travertine is dull in paths across the deck. Is that dirt?
Sometimes, but on beachfront decks it is often wear from sand under feet. Cleaning will show which it is. Worn paths can be evened out by honing.
Can honing fix pitted coping?
Light pitting can often be improved by honing before sealing. Deep pitting or spalling may need replacement pieces. We will tell you which applies.
How long does a travertine seal last on a beachfront pool?
It depends on the sealer, exposure and use. On a beachfront pool, expect to re-seal the coping more often than any sheltered paving, and let an annual water-drop test set the timing.
Do you work around pool fencing and equipment?
Yes. We protect fencing, pumps and covers, and work around them carefully. Let us know about any pool equipment that needs to stay running.
