Sandstone cleaning and sealing in Phillip Bay

Phillip Bay sandstone is mostly house fences, steps and garden walls exposed to wind off Botany Bay. We clean it gently and seal what takes the weather.

Most Phillip Bay sandstone is on the street side of a house: a low fence with piers, a set of entry steps and a path, plus garden walls and edging in the yard. Facing the bay, the stone collects a mix of salt and fine grit that dulls its colour. Garden walls show gritty tide-marks from sandy soil, shaded paths turn green, and stone near gates carries rust. Older homes along Yarra Road may also have weathered sandstone with old cement patches. We inspect, test a small area of each surface, and explain what each method will achieve before you commit to anything.

Grit and salt are removed dry first, by brush and vacuum, then the stone is rinsed with fresh water at low pressure. Traffic film and garden tide-marks respond to a sandstone-safe detergent and soft brushing. Algae is killed in place over a few days, and rust spots are lifted with an iron-specific poultice that sits overnight. Neither acid nor a pencil jet is used at any point. Mats and a small bund on the downhill side hold back the wash water, which is then vacuumed up, so none of it travels down the street toward the bay or into the drains.

Around Phillip Bay homes, protection matters most where feet and weather meet the stone: entry steps, garden paths and the flat tops of fences. Treated with a breathable impregnator, these shrug off grit, salt and muddy garden water, so a broom and the occasional rinse keep them tidy. Retaining walls and garden walls backed by soil are left bare. You will see a natural sample and an enhancing one side by side before deciding, the sealer goes on only when the day is calm and dry, and a note of the product and the areas treated is left with you. A few drops of water on the paths every couple of years tell you whether the protection is still working.

Frequently asked questions

Sandstone questions we hear in Phillip Bay.

Is sealing worth it for a sandstone path?

Usually. It stops grit and spills soaking in, so the path stays cleaner with less effort.

Our older sandstone has grey cement patches. Can they be removed?

Often, by careful raking out and repointing or patching in a softer, better-matched mortar. We assess each patch first.

How long does a typical Phillip Bay job take?

A fence, steps and path are often a day of cleaning, with sealing on a later dry, calm day.

Will cleaning damage our garden?

No. We cover or pre-wet the plants, and the wash water is vacuumed up instead of soaking into the beds.
