Sandstone cleaning and sealing in Edgecliff

In Edgecliff the stone problem is usually soot, shade and wear rather than salt. We clean each surface for what is actually on it and seal only where it pays off.

Walk past the apartment blocks on Edgecliff's side streets and the same pattern repeats: a sandstone fence that has turned charcoal on the road side, steps worn into shallow dishes, and a retaining wall streaked green below a garden bed. The older villas add carved gate piers, garden edging and boundary walls that have been patched over the decades with whatever mortar was to hand. Before quoting, our technicians test a small hidden area on each type of surface, because exhaust film, organic growth and old sealer residue each respond to a different cleaner, and choosing wrongly wastes a visit and can leave a patchy result.

Exhaust grime responds to an alkaline sandstone-safe detergent, a soft brush and a hot-water rinse at low pressure, which together soften the binder without scouring the grains. Growth on shaded walls is treated with a biocide and left long enough to die back fully, sometimes over several days, before the dead material is rinsed away. Where a previous owner has rolled a glossy coating over the stone, we trial a gentle stripper on a small patch before deciding on the rest. All wash water is caught at the low side, vacuumed up and taken away, which on a sloping street front stops it running across the footpath.

Sealing in Edgecliff pays off most on entry steps, paths and the caps of front fences, where a breathable impregnator keeps soot and spills near the surface so that a building manager's routine wash actually works. Retaining walls holding back wet soil, and the lower courses of old walls that wick up ground water, are usually better left unsealed so salts can leave at the face. We lay down a natural and an enhancing sample side by side so the committee can compare them, then record the product and areas treated. On a busy entry, a quick water-drop test each year tells you when the protection is wearing thin.

Frequently asked questions

Sandstone questions we hear in Edgecliff.

Why does the road side of our fence go dark faster than the garden side?

Traffic exhaust settles on the face closest to the road. A breathable sealer on that face slows the build-up and makes routine washing more effective.

Our building's steps are worn into dips. Can cleaning help?

Cleaning restores colour and grip but cannot rebuild worn stone. Deep wear needs a stonemason, and we can say on site whether it is worth calling one.

Someone painted a clear gloss over our sandstone. Can it come off?

Usually. We trial a mild stripper on a small patch first, then remove it in stages and leave the stone open to breathe.

Will sealing make our entry steps slippery?

No. The impregnators we use soak into the pores and leave the surface texture as it was. Glossy coatings are never used on anything people walk on.
