Travertine cleaning and sealing in Bellevue Hill

Many Bellevue Hill pool areas and outdoor rooms use travertine. Shade, leaves and pool water each mark it differently, and none of them should be treated with acid.

Travertine on a Bellevue Hill property usually belongs to a renovation or rebuild: a pool terrace, a loggia, or a set of wide steps linking the house to the garden. Being on a leafy ridge rather than the waterfront, it sees less sea salt and more organic staining. Leaves and flowers leave tannin rings, shaded corners grow black mould, and pot plants leave marks where water sits beneath them. Around the pool, splash water leaves scale, and the coping darkens as filler washes out of the holes. None of these problems is serious on its own, but together they make a terrace look tired well before the stone itself is worn.

We clean this travertine with pH-neutral and mildly alkaline products made for limestone, worked in with soft rotary brushes and rinsed at low pressure so the filler stays in the holes. Mould in shaded corners is treated with a limestone-safe biocide and given time to dwell before any scrubbing. Organic stains that have soaked in may need a poultice. The pool is protected throughout and the run-off recovered. Etch marks from earlier acidic cleaners will not wash away, whatever product is used; if you have them, we explain the difference between etching and dirt on site and quote honing as a separate step, so you can decide whether it is worth doing.

Once the stone is clean and dry, open holes are packed with a filler blended to the stone's colour, and a penetrating sealer goes on in light coats, with anything left on the surface wiped away. Under trees and near the pool, the sealer's main job is to slow tannins, oils and pool water down so they can be rinsed off before they stain. The finish stays natural and keeps its grip on wet days. We note the product and date for your records and recommend a yearly water-drop test on the coping and the busiest areas. Shaded travertine under trees may also benefit from a light maintenance clean every year or two.

Frequently asked questions

Travertine questions we hear in Bellevue Hill.

Our travertine has brown rings under where the pot plants stood. Can they come out?

Usually, yes. They are typically tannin or mineral staining from the potting mix and water, and a targeted clean or poultice lifts most of it. Saucers with feet stop them returning.

Can you treat mould on travertine in a shaded loggia?

Yes, with a limestone-safe biocide that is left to dwell, then scrubbed and rinsed. Bleach products can leave residues and affect sealers, so we avoid them.

Does travertine away from the ocean still need sealing?

Yes, particularly around pools and under trees. The sealer keeps pool water, tannin and food oils out of the pores and makes cleaning far easier.

How do we tell etching from dirt on our terrace?

Etch marks feel slightly rough and look dull from every angle, often in the shape of a spill. Dirt usually lifts with a wet cloth and a little detergent. We confirm on site.
